With a population of 5,400 and a median family income of $114,279, it is an affordable alternative to the more expensive communities along the lake that also boasts great schools and provides an array of amenities for its residents.


Housing styles include Colonials, Tudors, Cape Cods, ranches and split-levels, and there is relatively more new construction here than in areas closer to the lake. House prices start at $250,000 and go up to $3,500,000, with a median sale price of $830,000. Condos and town-home prices range from $150,000 to $995,000, with a median price of $300,000. Many of the properties here are larger and more spread out than those closer to the lake. As a result, Northfield is more of a “driving town” than a “walking town”.


The majority of students in Northfield attend schools in District 29:  Middlefork School (K-3) and Sunset Ridge School (4-8). A small part of Northfield is served by Avoca School District 37 in Wilmette. An even smaller part is served by Glenview School District 34.

High school students attend New Trier High School. Freshman go to the Northfield campus on Happ Rd. Upperclassmen attend the Winnetka campus. Nearby Catholic high schools include Loyola Academy (co-ed) and Regina Dominican (girls) in Wilmette.

Northfield is also home to the Glenview Montessori School serving children 2 to 6 years old, and the Christian Heritage Academy, a private school for grades Pre-K – 9th.


The Northfield Park District maintains three neighborhood parks within the village: Clarkson Park, Fox Meadow Park and Willow Park.

  • Clarkson Park (Willow Rd. and Bristol St.) has a Lodge with fireplaces inside and out, a playground and a seasonal ice rink. The Park District also puts on special events here in the summer, including a Summer Concert in the Park series, the Northfield State Fair and a Kids’ Dog Show.
  • Willow Park (Willow and Wagner Roads) has 4 lighted ball fields, 2 lighted soccer fields, 2 tennis courts, walking paths and a fitness shelter.
  • Fox Meadow Park (Willow and Waukegan Roads) has soccer fields and a playground.

The Northfield Community Center features a full sized gym, fitness center and Residents’ Center. The park district offers a full menu of youth sports programs and activities.

Northfield is one of the few North Shore communities which issues licenses for keeping horses. It also features extensive biking and jogging trails, as well as wooded hiking trails and bridle paths through the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve.

The North Shore Senior Center, located at 161 Northfield Rd., is one of the largest and best-attended senior centers in the area and offers a wealth of programs and services.


Northfield has easy access to two of Chicago’s biggest highway systems: I-94 and I-294. Commuters can also reach downtown Chicago via the Metra trains from nearby Winnetka or Glenview.

The majority of the 1986 film, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, was shot in and around New Trier’s freshman campus on Happ Rd. in Northfield.
