Summer Sidewalk Sales on the North Shore

Sidewalk sale season on the North Shore kicks off this weekend in Glencoe. What exactly is  a sidewalk sale? Usually orchestrated by the local Chamber of Commerce, all the merchants in town pick a day to have a big sale, both inside their shops and outside on the sidewalk (hence the name sidewalk sale). Traditionally it was exclusively a shopping event, with great prices on merchandise and even some steep discounts on selected items. Lately, in an effort to lure entire families to the downtown area, sidewalk sales have become elevated to street fair status. Now many sidewalk sales  include activities for kids, music and food as part of the event. Wilmette has led the charge in expanding the sidewalk sale concept, but other communities are following suit.

Glencoe
